Definition of translation

Translating is a task consisting of the interpretation (putting the same ideas in words of another language giving the reader the same feelings and causing the same ideas to rise than the original) of any sort of text (the so-called source text) into an equivalent text in another language (the so-called target text). The product of the translation activity, the target or final text, is also called translation.

Traditionally, translation has been done by people, but people have been trying many times the automation of natural texts (automatic translation) as well as using computers to help in the translation task (computer-assisted translation). The assisted translation consists of using a translation memory, for example, it is called Computer Assisted Translation (CAT).

The goal of any translation activity is to create an equivalent relation between the source text and the target text, or with other words: both texts should communicate the same idea or message, having other features into account, like textual genre, the context, grammatical rules of each language, stylistic conventions, phraseology, etc.

It is very important to appreciate the difference between translation and interpreting. In the first case, the ideas are transmitted and expressed as something written, from one language into another one. In the case of an interpretation, the ideas are expressed orally or by means of gesticulation (like in the signs language) from a language into another one.

According to the analysis of the processes involved in the translation and interpreting, it could be thought that interpreting represents a subcategory of the translation.
