History of the Spanish language

Spanish come from Vulgar Latin, with influences from Basque, and to some minor extent Celtiberian and Arabic, in the North of the Iberian Peninsula, between Biscay and contemporary Cantabria’s corners, somewhat as strongly innovative and differing variant from its nearest cousin, Leonese speech, with a higher degree of Basque influence.

This northern dialect from Cantabria was carried south during the Reconquista, and indeed is still a minority language in the northern coastal regions of Morocco.

In Salamanca, Spain, in 1492, Elio Antonio de Nebrija wrote the first Latin to Spanish grammar (Gramática de la Lengua Castellana).

From the 16th century onwards, colonization brought the Spanish language to the Americas and Spanish East Indies. In this time as well, the Spanish language became the most important one of Politics and Art across the major part of Europe. The French language replaced it in the 18th century.
In the 20th century, the Spanish language was introduced in Equatorial Guinea and Western Sahara and parts of U.S.A., such as Spanish Harlem in New York City, that had not been part of the Spanish Empire.
